It’s that time of year to drag out and dust off your slow cooker. We tend to ignore our slow cookers during the warmer months but September is the perfect time to get re-acquainted for a few reasons. Just chuck all the ingredients in it in the morning and by late afternoon you have a delicious dinner ready to serve up. Do You Need To Fry The Meat Before Adding It To The Slow Cooker? For this recipe I fried the beef quickly before adding it to the slow cooker. This isn’t essential and you can add it straight to the slow cooker if you are short on time.
But it does help to intensify the rich flavour of the meat. Once browned, the beef and any juices are added to the slow cooker and it’s left to cook on high for 4-5 hours or low for 7-8 hours. I like to serve it with mashed potato as it helps to soak up all that wonderful juice. Getting kids to eat recipes like this beef casserole can sometimes be a bit of a struggle but I find that the simple addition of just a sprinkle of grated cheese on top helps them to start those first few bites.
