Ever considered making your own zero waste skincare? I’ve been living on a farm for over a week, so I thought I’d use the plants harvested on the property to create a rich vegan body butter recipe. If I can be completely honest, I was never a big fan of lavender until recently. But after being surrounded by this scent for a few days, I’ve grown to love it. I’ve been developing my own body butter recipes for a few years, after discovering The Wellness mama’s blog (which is a wonderful website full of inspiration and recipes btw!).
I’ve tried making my own day cream, but honestly my face looked terrible after a few months so I had to go back to commercial products. While using rich creams on my body makes my skin silky smooth, I found it clogged the pores in my T zone when applied on my face. So for now, I’m sticking to body butters and deodorants. This cream will make your skin super soft. I’m 38 and people tell me I look 10 years younger all the time. Obviously, I can’t credit my moisturizer entirely for this, but it’s crucial to hydrate your skin if you’re trying to slow down ageing.
The key to making the perfect body butter is using a combination of high quality oils and butters. I did use coconut oil in my first few batches, but I had to replace it as I discovered it clogs my pores like crazy! I also stopped using it in my deodorant recipes for this reason.
For this recipe you’ll need the following products (click on each to see products):
The first step is to melt the shea butter and cacao butter. For this you’ll need a metal bowl, which you’ll place in a bigger bowl filled with hot water (make sure water doesn’t get into the metal bowl). It should melt in about 5 minutes. Once it’s liquefied, you’ll have to add the remaining ingredients and cool the liquid until it hardens again. The whole process is pretty quick.
The reason why I recommend using deodorized shea butter and cacao butter is because it will overpower the lavender scent, which makes using lavender essential oil completely pointless. I’ve been able to make this recipe completely zero waste, so if you’re in a big city and have local shops where to get oils and butters in bulk you can avoid plastic containers entirely.Print
